What we treat
Hernias are common, especially in men. They do not go away on their own and can grow over time, but most are harmless and the surgery is straightforward. If the bulge suddenly becomes tender and hard and cannot be pushed back in, go to the emergency department immediately.
The most common hernias we treat are inguinal hernias (the most common type), femoral hernias, umbilical hernias and midline hernias above the navel, as well as incisional hernias in old surgical scars.
The diagnosis is based on a consultation and examination; when needed, an ultrasound scan is performed to confirm it. The surgeon goes through the surgical options with you – laparoscopic or open surgery – and whether and when surgery is recommended.

Prices
Consultations, examinations and hernia surgery with Klíníkin's surgeons are provided under a contract with Icelandic Health Insurance (SÍ). With a doctor's referral, you pay the patient fee according to the SÍ fee schedule and your entitlements, and Icelandic Health Insurance pays the rest. You can also book an appointment directly, without a referral.
We review your entitlement and costs with you at your appointment before any decision is made, so there are no unexpected charges.
Referral or booking. A referral from your GP secures coverage by Icelandic Health Insurance; you can also book an appointment directly on My Pages or by calling 519 7000.
Consultation and examination. The surgeon examines the hernia, assesses its size and symptoms and goes through the surgical options with you. An ultrasound scan is performed if needed.
Surgery and follow-up. The surgery is performed in Klíníkin's operating theatre, usually under general anaesthesia as day surgery, and most patients go home the same day. You receive written instructions on preparation and aftercare on My Pages.
