BRCA and other high-risk genes

Women with mutations in the BRCA genes (1 or 2) are at a significantly increased risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime. Other genes can also increase this risk. Genetic testing can determine whether a woman has mutations in these genes, and one option, once such knowledge is available, is to undergo surgery to reduce this risk. The breast surgeons at Klíníkin provide advice to these women in addition to offering risk-reducing mastectomy surgeries, along with breast reconstructions, for those who choose them. In recent years, numerous Icelandic and foreign women have utilised this service at the Breast Clinic.

In Iceland, there is an active association, the BRAKKA Association (www.brca.is), which has managed education and rights for those diagnosed with a genetic mutation associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.

Preventive mastectomy and breast reconstruction

The breast surgeons at Klíníkin have specialised in risk-reducing mastectomies and breast reconstruction and have extensive experience in such procedures, both in Iceland and abroad.

The conditions for performing risk-reducing mastectomies and breast reconstruction at Klíníkin are of the highest standard. Emphasis is placed on offering personal and individualised service. A multidisciplinary team then takes care of each woman during the aftercare, i.e., nursing, physiotherapy, etc.

There is an agreement with Icelandic Health Insurance (SÍ) regarding co-payment for these procedures, and the basic cost of the surgery is therefore comparable to having the procedure performed elsewhere within the Icelandic healthcare system. Information regarding the patient's cost participation can be found on the Icelandic Health Insurance website, sjukra.is.

Cosmetic breast surgery

In addition to offering all types of traditional breast cosmetic surgeries, such as breast augmentations and breast reductions, the Breast Clinic (Brjóstaklíníkin) offers specialised services for women who wish to have their breast implants removed and achieve the best possible aesthetic outcome afterwards.

In these procedures, our breast surgeons utilise the experience they have gained in breast reconstruction and revision during or after surgery for breast cancer. In most cases, it is possible to achieve a good aesthetic result after implants are removed, and a wide variety of surgical options are available. It is important that these procedures are tailored to the needs and wishes of each individual woman, and we take pride in offering such personalised service. The cost of these surgeries depends on the type of procedure (see price list).

Additionally, Klíníkin's breast surgeons perform surgeries for benign male breast enlargement (gynecomastia).

How long do I need to wait?

The waiting time for breast reduction depends on where you are on the waiting list and whether the procedure is paid for by Icelandic Health Insurance (SÍ) or yourself. The Directorate of Health maintains the waiting lists for all institutions and publishes figures on the wait for selected surgeries in the dashboard below. It shows the number of people waiting, the number of operations performed, and what percentage has waited longer than 90 days – which is the Directorate's benchmark for an acceptable wait for surgery.

Surgery with SÍ (Icelandic Health Insurance) co-payment

Klíníkin has a contract with Icelandic Health Insurance (SÍ) for breast reduction surgeries. If SÍ's conditions are met, SÍ pays for the surgery and you only pay a visit fee in accordance with the regulation on co-payments of insured persons. In short, the conditions are that a plastic surgeon has assessed that surgery is the correct treatment and you are on a waiting list for surgery, that you are covered by Icelandic health insurance, and that the number of surgeries under the annual contract has not been exhausted – those who have waited the longest have priority.

We will review your status in the first consultation and tell you immediately if and when you are entitled to SÍ coverage. You do not need to calculate this yourself.

Don't want to wait?

If you have not acquired the right to a SÍ coverage, you can choose to pay for the surgery yourself and have it done sooner. Same team, same operating theatre, and same ward; the only difference is who pays. The price is in the price list above.

Please note that according to Klíníkin's contract with Icelandic Health Insurance, we are not permitted to perform surgery on a self-pay basis for those who already qualify for SÍ coverage. We will review your rights with you before a decision is made.
