About the ward
Klíníkin is the only private healthcare institution in Iceland licensed to operate an inpatient ward. This means that major procedures – joint replacements, spinal surgery, metabolic surgery, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), laparoscopic women's health surgery and breast surgery – are performed here with an overnight stay, instead of you having to go home the same day or go to hospital. For abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), Klíníkin is the only surgical unit in Iceland outside hospitals that can offer inpatient admission and post-operative monitoring.
Nurses are on duty around the clock throughout your stay and a doctor is on call. The ward has both single and double rooms. After joint replacement, a physiotherapist visits you the day after surgery and you receive an individualised rehabilitation plan to take home.
Most patients undergoing joint replacement, spinal stenosis surgery, metabolic surgery or abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) stay one night. One night's stay is included in the price of procedures where it is part of the treatment; an extra night costs ISK 94,000.
How we can help
During your stay, a nurse is on duty 24/7 and a doctor is on call – you are never alone with your worries or pain. The inpatient ward is open from Monday morning to Friday.
Most patients stay one night after surgery, e.g. after joint replacement, spinal stenosis surgery, metabolic surgery and major plastic surgery. One night is included in the price of the procedure where an inpatient stay is necessary; many smaller procedures are day surgery.
Light and comfortable clothing that is easy to put on, slippers, toiletries, your medications in their original packaging, and charging cables. It is a good idea to bring reading material or other entertainment (phone/tablet), as there are no TVs in the rooms. If you need crutches after the operation, you must obtain them yourself in advance, at a pharmacy or from a physiotherapist. Leave valuables at home – medical clothing will be provided for you here.
Prices
One night's stay is included in the price of procedures where an overnight stay is part of the treatment – for example joint replacement, spinal stenosis surgery and metabolic surgery. If a longer stay is needed, each extra night is charged separately: ISK 94,000.
When surgery is performed under a contract with Icelandic Health Insurance, the patient's share of the cost follows the SÍ fee schedule and the stay is included.

Admission
You arrive at the agreed time on the day of surgery, having fasted according to the instructions. A nurse receives you, goes through your medication and prepares you for surgery. After the procedure you wake up in the recovery room and then move to the inpatient ward.
Your stay
On the inpatient ward you are monitored by nurses around the clock and a doctor is on call. Pain relief is adjusted as needed, and after joint replacement a physiotherapist visits you the day after surgery to get you moving.
Discharge
Discharge is normally at 9:30 the day after surgery. A nurse then goes through the instructions with you: wound care, painkillers, exercises and what applies to showering, driving and work. Instructions and follow-up appointments appear on My Pages, and if anything comes up, call 519 7000.
