Preparation for surgery: education about the procedure, fasting, medication, and what is good to bring with you, along with a health assessment and measurements as needed.
Post-operative monitoring: wound inspection, dressing changes, removal of sutures and staples, assessment of swelling, pain, and healing. Wound management of complex surgical wounds and advice on skin and scar formation.
Telephone consultation: a nurse answers questions about recovery, medication, and symptoms, and assesses whether you need to come for an examination or see a doctor. Also education and support, including for relatives, regarding assistive devices, exercise, and daily life after surgery, and other nursing treatments as prescribed by a physician.
How we can help you
Sutures or staples are usually removed 10–14 days after surgery, depending on the procedure and the location of the incision. We examine the wound, change the dressings, and assess the healing. In most cases, you can shower after 24–48 hours with waterproof dressings; avoid baths, swimming, and hot tubs until the wound is completely healed.
After the procedure, you will receive an appointment at the nursing clinic if needed – either booked at discharge or via a phone call. You can also contact us yourself by phone at 519 7000 or through 'Mínar síður' (My Pages). A nurse will assess the request and book an appointment or refer to a doctor as needed. No referral is required.
The reception is open Monday–Friday from 08:00–15:30. If acute symptoms arise outside of opening hours – severe pain, fever over 38.5 °C, increasing redness and swelling, bleeding, or shortness of breath – you should contact your surgeon, Læknavaktin (out-of-hours medical service) at 1700, or the emergency number 112, depending on the severity of the symptoms.
