Sigurður Blöndal
Specialist in general surgery
Sigurður is an abdominal surgeon with a focus on surgeries of the upper abdomen. His specialty includes procedures on the stomach and oesophagus, liver and biliary tract. He has extensive experience in laparoscopic surgery on these organs, e.g., partial gastrectomy, acid reflux surgery, diaphragmatic hernia surgery, as well as gallbladder and liver procedures. Hernia repair in athletes has been a special interest of Sigurður's. He has decades of experience in gastroscopy and colonoscopy, as well as endoscopy of the biliary tract. At Klíníkin, Sigurður will work closely with surgeon Aðalsteinn Arnarson and the obesity team.
Sigurður graduated from the University of Iceland's Faculty of Medicine in 1986. He then underwent specialist training in surgery at Ninewells Hospital in Scotland from 1990-2000 under the guidance of Prof. A. Cuschieri, who was a global pioneer in laparoscopic surgery. He completed his specialist certification from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1995.
After returning to Iceland in 2000, Sigurður has worked as a specialist at the
Department of Abdominal Surgery at Landspítali University Hospital (LSH). He has also held part-time positions at St. Joseph's Hospital and Akranes Hospital, in addition to running a private practice at Domus Medica and later at the Digestive Centre in Glæsibær.
