Klíníkin's colorectal surgeon diagnoses and treats diseases of the rectum and anus – haemorrhoids, fissures, fistulas, abscesses, and rectal prolapse – using modern procedures, most of which are performed under local anaesthesia in the outpatient clinic.

What we treat

Anal problems are common, but few people talk about them. Most are harmless and easily resolved, but symptoms such as bleeding, pain, itching, a lump, or changes in bowel habits must always be examined – both to relieve discomfort and to rule out more serious diseases.

The most common problems we treat are haemorrhoids (internal and external) and skin tags at the anus, anal fissures, fistulas and abscesses, pilonidal sinus, mucosal prolapse and rectal prolapse, faecal incontinence and obstructed defecation, itching and skin diseases of the anus, genital warts and precancerous lesions, as well as cancer of the rectum and anus.

Diagnosis is based on a consultation, examination, and proctoscopy in the outpatient clinic; when necessary, an ultrasound of the rectum and sphincter or a colonoscopy is performed. The colorectal surgeon at Klíníkin has decades of experience with these diseases, both here at home and in Sweden, and is a clinical associate professor at the University of Iceland.

How we can help

Treatment ranging from consultation and medication to laser surgery (LHP) and traditional surgery. Less pain and shorter recovery time with laser.

Fissures are treated with medication and surgery if needed; fistulas with laser or VAAFT endoscopic surgery which spares the sphincter muscle. Abscesses are opened and drained. Pilonidal sinus is treated with laser or VAAFT under local anaesthesia.

Prices

Consultation, examinations, and procedures with the colorectal surgeon at Klíníkin are covered under the agreement between the Reykjavík Medical Association and Icelandic Health Insurance (SÍ). With a referral from a doctor, you pay a co-payment according to the SÍ tariff and your rights, and SÍ pays the remainder. You can also book a consultation directly, without a referral.

Larger surgeries performed in Klíníkin's operating theatre are either covered under the contract with SÍ or paid for by the patient. We will review your rights and costs with you during the consultation before a decision is made, so there are no unexpected payments.

How does the process work?

How does the process work?

Referral or booking. A referral from a GP ensures SÍ coverage; you can also book an appointment directly on My Pages or by calling 519 7000.

Consultation, examination, and endoscopy. During the first visit, the rectum is examined, and most often a brief proctoscopy is performed in Klíníkin. An ultrasound or colonoscopy is booked if needed.

Treatment and follow-up. Many procedures are performed on the spot in the outpatient clinic under local anaesthesia, others in Klíníkin's operating theatre under sedation or general anaesthesia. You will receive written instructions regarding preparation and aftercare on My Pages.
