Jónas Franklín

Jónas studied medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Iceland, graduating with a medical degree in 1998, and obtained his general medical licence in Iceland in 1999 after a residency year at Akureyri Hospital and the Healthcare Institution of North Iceland. Jónas worked as a resident physician in the orthopaedic surgery department of Akureyri Hospital until the year 2000.
Jónas completed specialist training in orthopaedic surgery at the university hospital in Lund, Sweden, and obtained his specialist licence in orthopaedic surgery in Sweden in 2004 and in Iceland in 2007.
Jónas worked as a specialist in orthopaedic surgery at the university hospital in Lund from 2004 to 2008.
In mid-2008, Jónas began working as a specialist in orthopaedic surgery at the orthopaedic surgery department of Akureyri Hospital.
In 2010, Jónas defended his doctoral thesis at Lund University, which focused on the genetics and risk factors of osteoarthritis of the hip and knee.
In the autumn of 2010, Jónas took over the position of chief physician of the Emergency Department of Akureyri Hospital and held it until he took over as head physician of orthopaedic surgery at Akureyri Hospital in 2013. Jónas held that position until the end of 2022. Since 2023, Jónas has worked at Klíníkin, at Læknastofur Akureyrar, and part-time at Akureyri Hospital.
