Ásgeir Theódórs
Gastroenterologist
Ásgeir is a gastroenterologist and emphasises consulting services regarding gastrointestinal diseases and endoscopies (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, and proctoscopy). Screening for colorectal cancer is and has been his main interest and project.
Ásgeir pursued specialist studies in internal medicine, gastroenterology, gastrointestinal endoscopy, and subsequently the diagnosis and treatment of malignant diseases at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, Cornell University, New York in the United States from 1975-1981.
After completing his studies, Ásgeir worked as chief physician of the gastroenterology department and later also as medical director at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hafnarfjörður from 1982 to 2011. He was also the supervising physician of the endoscopy departments at Borgarspítali, later Reykjavík Hospital, and Landspítali University Hospital until the end of 2017. In 1993 and 1994, he worked in the gastroenterology department of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
From 1983 to 2008, Ásgeir was a consultant to the Icelandic Cancer Society, the Directorate of Health, and members of parliament regarding colorectal cancer screening, and in 2008 he was appointed to the advisory committee on the health policy of the Minister of Health.
Ásgeir completed an Executive Master of Public Health and Health Management (eMPH) at Reykjavík University in 2010. He has written numerous articles and given lectures in Iceland and abroad about colorectal cancer and screening for the disease. He is the author of many educational publications on endoscopies and colorectal cancer, as well as educational films on colorectal cancer prevention.
Ásgeir is an honorary member of the CCU Association (2014) and an honorary member of the Capital Area Cancer Society (2019).
Ásgeir, along with other physicians, is now establishing a specialised service in the field of gastroenterology and surgery at Klíníkin, offering consultations for gastrointestinal problems, screening (cancer), and colorectal issues, among other things.
